How do I Share My Faith with My Child?
By David Wells and Laura Mulligan
As a parent (David writing), the first step in sharing the faith that has found you through Jesus is to live your faith. The old cliché holds true that faith is more often caught than taught. Children learn most by what they see their parents do.
For example, if you wish to teach your child the importance of tithing, write your check to God through the church in her presence. If you wish for your teenager to be more compassionate to others, take him to serve with you in a local homeless shelter for children. If your hope is to encourage your daughter and son to make their relationship with Jesus a priority, take time before bed each evening to pray with them.
None of this is to say that words aren’t important. Conversation around the dinner table has taken a back seat to a life of modern busyness. Many studies have concluded that those families that take the time eat together are more likely to grow together in their faith. In addition to the simple urging, “So, tell me about your day?” don’t be afraid to ask your child to describe any God moments she may have encountered. I have discovered that the more I talk with my children about how God is working in their lives, the more comfortable they are in sharing with me their God stories.
In addition, our family has enjoyed watching Christian movies and videos together throughout the years. Animated videos such as Joseph: King of Dreams or the Alex Kendrick film Facing the Giants provide wonderful opportunities for the entire family to come together and talk about real faith issues.
What are your thoughts, Laura?
David, I would definitely agree that in relation to our conduct in the eyes of our children actions speak so much louder than words. We are their role models. In our busy daily lives we need to embrace every teachable God moment whether that is in the car on the way to practice, at McDonalds, or on the playground. In everyday situations we need to try to be a Christ-like example to our kids, but on the days when we lose our temper or fail to act in a way that we should we need to let our children see us going to God in prayer and asking for forgiveness. I believe that it is good for children to see that their parents make mistakes and that even as adults we are still growing in our relationship with God.
We also need to remind our kids of the effect that some of the TV shows, songs on the radio, and websites on the internet can have on their hearts. Kids today are flooded with media images. Parents need to make sure to monitor what their children see and keep an open line of communication when they have questions about something they may not understand. Children need help to guide them to an awareness of what is appropriate for their age and in line with their family’s faith so they will make good choices even when Mom and Dad are not in the room.
This is a great children’s song to teach your kids in case they forget.
Be careful little eyes what you see…
Oh be careful little eyes what you see…
For the Father up above is looking down with love…
Oh be careful little eyes what you see.
(You can also sing little ears what you hear and little mouth what you say)
Children need to know that their whole family is trying to live like Jesus and that it’s cool to be a Christian at school, with their friends, in their neighborhood, and at home, and not just on Sunday mornings at church.
